WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) discussed the Republican government shutdown on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" this morning. Below are excerpts and a link to the video.

"[Republicans] are playing chicken with the credit and reputation of the United States of America."

"This [government shutdown] is different [than the 1995-96 shutdown] because this is a tactic, this is not a result of the inability to get an agreement. This is a tactic to do something that they knew they couldn't do and that is defund Obamacare."

"They're talking about now sitting down and talking - we have been ready to do that for six months, Steve. And that's what we ought to be doing. What we need now and what the President is saying is, look, we need a short-term bridge...to sit down and talk and, like any democracy needs to do, compromise."
