WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to comments on energy made by President Bush this morning:

“Democrats fully support increasing the domestic supply of oil, even though Republicans pretend otherwise out of political desperation.  In fact, we have brought multiple pieces of legislation to the House Floor that would do just that.  Republicans have repeatedly blocked these efforts.  The President neglected to mention today that 44 million acres are already leased and available for drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf, and 33 million of those acres are not being used.  Democrats will continue to push oil companies to develop the natural resources already at our disposal.  It is clear that Republicans want a political issue, rather than real solutions.”
