WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after he attended a briefing for Members of Congress conducted by U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen on the Federal response to the BP Gulf oil spill, and as the House wrapped up a week of hearings on the spill and its impact:

“Earlier today, I joined Members of the House and Senate for a briefing from U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen on the Federal response to the BP Gulf oil spill. As we provide continuing oversight of efforts to contain the spill and mitigate the devastation, Congress is also engaged in a thorough investigation into what led to this tragedy - with five House hearings this week alone - in order to hold responsible parties accountable, as well as inform what changes must be made so it never happens again.  In addition, our focus is on ensuring resources to continue the response and help Gulf coast communities, while taking steps to guarantee that taxpayers will not pay. As with any national disaster, the public needs additional assurance that all aspects of the response, from cleanup to claims, are being enforced and coordinated by the federal government. Congress is working hard to do its part to meet that goal.”
