WASHINGTON DC – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) issued the following statement today in response to the second meeting of the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform and in recognition of the anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Income Tax on March 8:
“I am pleased that the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform is continuing with its consideration of federal tax reform by holding their second hearing today.
“This issue is far too important to be placed on the back burner, as some have implied is the White House’s intent.
“Tuesday is the anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Income Tax. Since then, the tax code has become incredibly complicated and burdensome for the average taxpayer, which undermines confidence in the system and has a corrosive effect on our democracy.
“It is necessary to the health of our democracy that we have a simple, fair and fiscally responsible tax system. Americans shouldn’t have to give up an entire weekend to calculate their taxes and they must have the confidence that they are paying no more than their fair share.
“These hearings are an important step towards making these essential reforms in the system.
“I am determined to make progress this year on this issue and I look forward to working with the White House and fellow Members of Congress to make the tax code simpler, fairer and more fiscally responsible. This is in the best interest of all Americans and will help ensure that the system is fair for everyone.”
