WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, which is celebrated throughout May:

“This May, as we observe Jewish American Heritage Month, we mark more than 350 years of Jewish contribution to America’s national life. From often-humble, immigrant beginnings, Jews have thrived in America, a haven for all victims of persecution and a true land of opportunity. Today, Jewish Americans contribute to America in every field of endeavor, aided by hard work and by America’s longstanding commitment to freedom of religion and thought. As the leaders of the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, wrote in a 1790 letter to George Washington, ours is ‘a government which to bigotry gives no sanction, to persecution no assistance—but generously affording to All liberty of conscience, and immunities of citizenship, deeming every one, of whatever nation, tongue or language equal parts.’”
