WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama announced a goal to reduce oil imports by one-third by 2025:

“I applaud President Obama for announcing an ambitious goal of reducing oil imports by one-third by 2025. Reducing our dependence on foreign oil is an economic imperative—and a national security imperative. The continuing unrest in the Middle East and the rise of gas prices is a wake-up call that we must become more energy independent. Democrats are committed to increasing energy independence and security; in fact, we enacted the first new fuel efficiency standards for cars in 32 years.

“Now, we must expand safe and responsible domestic oil and gas development and develop alternative sources of energy. We must also harness our greatest natural resource - the talent and innovation of American entrepreneurs – to ensure that when it comes to the next great clean energy breakthroughs, we Make It In America. For example, the advanced vehicles that the President called for in his speech should be made right here in America and powered by clean-burning domestic electricity, natural gas and biofuels.

“The bold vision President Obama outlined today should serve as a call to action, as we work to create energy jobs here in America and reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil.”
