Democrats Remain Focused on Jobs, Economy and Stand Ready to Work with Republicans on Compromise Spending Measure

For Immediate Release:

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, the House passed another short-term measure that will fund the government for three weeks. I hope that it will be the last. We cannot continue to fund the government in week by week increments. It wastes taxpayer money and creates uncertainty for the private and public sector. It’s time for Republicans to work with Democrats on a compromise measure that will fund the government for the remainder of the year. I have urged them to stop insisting on extreme social policy riders and to move away from their reckless demand for $100 billion in spending cuts. Instead, I hope they will work with us to make smart, targeted cuts that reduce spending while protecting investments that help create jobs and grow the economy.

After ending two programs that help responsible Americans stay in their homes last week, Republicans voted to end another housing program this week. Without offering any new solutions to help these families, Republicans are cutting programs that help those affected by the foreclosure crisis. I was also disappointed that Republicans chose to spend their time terminating federal funding for NPR, rather than working to create jobs or reduce the deficit. It’s now been 11 weeks since Republicans took charge of the House, and they have not taken a single action to spur job creation.

When we return from our district work period, we will be focused on reaching agreement to fund the government for the rest of the year. I also hope Republicans finally take action on jobs, which Americans have made clear is their top concern.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
