MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, I was disappointed when House Republicans returned from the August District Work Period without a jobs plan and a Fall schedule that takes no meaningful action to help put more Americans back to work. While Republicans have been in the majority for nine months and still haven’t put forward a jobs plan, Democrats have been focused on our Make It In America plan – a plan to create jobs by promoting an encouraging environment for businesses to innovate and make products here in the U.S. And throughout the Fall, we will propose Make It In America amendments to highlight ways we can address Americans’ top priorities: creating jobs and growing our economy.
I was pleased many elements of the Make It In America plan were included in the American Jobs Act, the plan President Obama unveiled last night to create jobs and grow the economy. The President’s proposed legislation will be paid for and includes many proposals that both Republicans and Democrats support. I will be urging my colleagues to support this bill and take action quickly to help put more Americans back to work, strengthen the economy, and reduce the deficit.
Today, the House held a moment of silence and passed a bipartisan 9/11 resolution commemorating the attack on America a decade ago, honoring the memory of those lost and thanking the brave men and women who risk their lives to keep us safe. We also passed a bipartisan Intelligence Authorization bill that will eliminate wasteful spending, while ensuring that our intelligence community has every tool necessary to fight terrorism and keep America safe.
I’m disappointed that Republicans will not be bringing any jobs bills to the Floor next week. I hope that once the American Jobs Act has been introduced, Republicans will work with us to quickly act on it so that we can create jobs and ensure more families can make it in America.
