WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) today released the following statement in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 75th birthday:

“Today we commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: a minister, a civil rights leader, a father, a Nobel Laureate.  Dr. King led the fight to reform America’s ideas of equality and civil rights – and to forcefully dispel the notion that the American dream was only limited to Americans of a certain color or background.

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) spoke today at a press conference regarding a landmark test of the historical Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.)  The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments this week in State of Tennessee v. George Lane and Beverly Jones, a case that could drastically limit enforcement of key provisions in the ADA that protect millions of people with disabilities from discrimination by public entities.   The following is Representative Hoyer’s statement as prepared for delivery:

In 2003 Democrats fought for working families: expanding economic opportunity, improving schools and health care, protecting Social Security and Medicare. Republicans served special interests: passing tax cuts that left the middle class behind and a Rx drug bill that helped pharmaceutical companies instead of seniors, and failing to fully fund the No Child Left Behind education bill. WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today in response to the decision by a three-judge panel upholding new boundaries drawn for the State of Texas's 32 Congressional Districts:

"Americans of all political persuasions who believe that that fairness and equality at the polls are more important than the unchecked accumulation of political power will be as angry as I am by today's decision by a three-judge Federal panel to uphold Tom DeLay's Texas redistricting plan.

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD), a chief sponsor of the bipartisan “Late Term Abortion Restriction Act,” released the following statement today after President Bush signed the “Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act” into law:

 “Let’s be clear: The Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that President Bush signed into law today will not prevent one abortion.  Not one.  It simply bans a medical procedure performed in the most tragic of circumstances.

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) made the following statement tonight on the House Floor criticizing the anti-Semitic comments made by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad at the Organization of Islamic Conference on October 16.  Hoyer, Majority Whip Roy Blunt (MO) and Reps. Shelley Berkley (D-NV) and Eric Cantor (R-VA) introduced a Resolution that is being debated on the House Floor tonight condemning Prime Minister Mohammad’s comments:
