I would say as an aside, the last speaker talked about Native Americans. The National Congress of American Indians, of course, says: ‘this measure does nothing to address the crux of the issue – a lack of local authority to handle misdemeanor level and domestic dating violence when the perpetrator is non-Indian.’ It goes on to oppose this legislation.

As a cosponsor of the original Violence Against Women Act in 1994, I am deeply disappointed that Republicans are trying to politicize this issue. Traditionally, domestic violence legislation has been a subject of bipartisan consensus. In the past, we rallied together around our common responsibility to help law enforcement stop perpetrators of sexual assault, stalking, and partner abuse and provide resources to victims.

I am pleased that the Senate passed the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank that the House approved last week. This bipartisan legislation will enable the Export-Import Bank to continue helping American businesses remain competitive in overseas markets, which will, in turn, provide manufacturers with greater certainty that they can invest in growth and create well paying jobs here in our country.
Press Release: Thursday, May 10, 2012
“I opposed this appropriations bill for several reasons, chief among them that it is not consistent with the bipartisan agreement reached in August on spending levels. Breaking that agreement is just one more sign that this House Republican conference is simply unwilling to compromise or work with Democrats to find solutions to our challenges.

Israel is truly the product of a dream fulfilled. I have been personally enriched each of the twelve times I have visited Israel. The most recent was last summer, when I brought twenty-six Members of Congress with me. Now that I’ve been there twelve times, I guess you could say the next visit will be my ‘bar mitzvah’ trip.

Our number one priority must continue to be creating jobs and setting our economy back on a course toward sustainable growth that creates opportunities for our middle class. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told the House Budget Committee earlier this month that growth must take precedence over deficit reduction. I agree. However, putting our fiscal house in order by reining in deficits and getting our debt under control is a critical part of ensuring sustainable economic growth, and so it is essential for us to have a plan to reduce deficits once the economy has further recovered.

Wanted to be sure you saw this USA Today editorial highlighting growth in the manufacturing sector and investments government can make to build on this momentum, such as the Export-Import Bank and workforce development. These investments are part of Democrats’ Make It In America jobs plan – a plan to strengthen manufacturing and grow our economy by cultivating an encouraging environment for businesses to innovate and make products here in the U.S.

For federal employees and their families enduring years of frozen pay, a new proposal to cut their pay could not come at a worse time. Those who serve at federal agencies are middle-class workers who never see salaries or bonuses like those on Wall Street. Federal employees have been hurt by the recession just like the rest of America's middle class. They work hard each day in jobs that are frequently high in stress and responsibility but low in pay and benefits. But they know they are making a difference and serving their country.
Issue Report: Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Since taking the House majority, Republicans have chosen confrontation over compromise, choosing to move to the extreme right instead of moving to the middle and finding common ground. For over a year, Republicans have refused to work with Democrats, clinging to their partisan stance and walking away.
Issue Report: Thursday, May 10, 2012
Democrats are committed to a deficit reduction plan that asks all Americans to contribute their fair share and prevents sequestration from occurring through a balanced mix of spending cuts and revenues. Unfortunately, the Republican plan is not balanced and makes the wrong choices by ending the Medicare guarantee and targeting the most vulnerable among us, while cutting taxes for millionaires and billionaires.
